How I made my Aoi no Exorcist (Shiemi Moriyama) costume

Couple of months back, along with BanditYing and Cvy, I cosplayed as Moriyama Shiemi from the series, Ao no Exorcist. Here with an entry to share how I made her summer school uniform ^^

I must apologise that as I was in such a rush to make the costume, I didn’t have the luxury of snapping photos at every stage. Henceforth, some parts of the costumes might not be explained in depth. Either way, I hope the entry will help give you a bit of head start if you ever intend to make Shiemi’s School Uniform. Enjoy!

Box Pleated Skirt

Check out this entry to learn how to make a Knife pleated skirt.

Her skirt seemed like a box pleated skirt to me so I folded my pleats in a different way from the video. I used really cheap cotton and very much regretted it after as the skirt was so light the breeze kept bringing it up! Below are some pictures to share how I made the skirt.

Cut 2 long strips of cloth. The width of the skirt would be your skirt length + an extra inch of of edging. Box pleat them and hold the pleats in place with bobby pins.

Sew one side of the pleats down with a loose running stitch.

Sew both pieces together by the side. This will form one long strip of pleated fabric.

Cut off any extra fabric/pleats and then sew the hems.

Now, sew the zip on.

Basically, the pictures above shows how you are supposed to flip the zip to the other side and sew it down. I’m sorry but I don’t know how to explain the zip sewing part … let’s hope the pictures helps >.< ;;;

Make 2 markings (top and bottom of where the zip goes) on the fabric so you will have a visual guide.

Sew it down! If your Sewing Machine has a special footer for zips, then change your footer before sewing. If your machine don’t come with that, it’s fine too. It just takes a little more effort to get it done.

This is how it would look when you’re done. Continue the same steps with the other side of the zip.

After you’re done with the zip, this is roughly how the skirt would look like If you’re rushing for time or if your costume cannot see the band of the skirt, you can even skip the band and stop at this stage.

Length = Waist circumference + 2” (for the overlapping portion at the hook )

Width = 1” (Or how big u want your band to be) x 2 + 1” (extra edging for sewing)

The waist band is a long strip of rectangle fabric. Sew it on to the top of the skirt and you’re done! For more in-depth explanation, read this blog entry.

Collar Ribbon

I made her neck Ribbon by sticking ribbons diagonally on a navy blue fabric.

This is the butterfly ribbon part. The other half of the fabric without any ribbons stuck on will be the underside of the ribbon. Which is why it doesn’t need any ribbon(the red & white ribbons) decoration.

Yep, using too much glue gives a really yucky effect =\

These are the tails of the ribbon. The piece with the lesser ribbons stuck on it is the centre fabric to tie the ribbon and tails together.

To make the collar ribbon lasting, I made sure I hand sew the necessary pieces together to avoid any costume malfunction. For wearing convenience, I then hot glued a big safety pin onto the back of it so I can wear it like a brooch.

Ni-Chan Plushie

I have never made a Plushie before so I was really worried about making her Guardian Demon Prop. But since it was such a simple costume, It felt really unconvincing if I didn’t have her Ni-Chan with her.

Personally, I really like Ni-chan and Shiemi. They are the type that gets overlooked because of their appearance even though both are surprisingly strong and useful!

With some suggestion from a friend, I decided to make my Ni-Chan out of socks. Not the best texture but I guess I could live with it

Drafted the silhouette of Ni-chan on the sock. Sew and then cut it out. Flip it inside out and then stuff it with cotton.

Ni-Chan’s right hand is a darker shade of green hence I used another pair of socks to make his right arm.

I drafted his eyes on paper and cut them out to gauge the proportion. After I’m satisfied with the size and shape of it, I use the paper as a template and cut a similar piece of felt out. I used markers to draw the details of the eyes and then glued them onto the face with fabric glue.

I attempted to mimic the darker colour patches on Ni-Chan by marking it out with a dark green marker but the nylon fabric absorbed most of it =(

To make my Ni-chan more pose friendly, I also inserted wires inside to make him pose-able. A single marble is also inserted into his abdominal to give him weight to sit down firmly.

Belt, Socks and Blouse

The rest of the costume were pretty much store bought =) Bought my belt from Daiso and my opaque tights from a Socks shop in Bishan Junction 8. Hope these information helps!

Hope you guys enjoyed the pictures and feel as inspired as I have! Honestly I find it so amazing that a hobby so frowned upon by mainstream elitist can actually have the ability to inspire and motivate someone else half way across the globe.

While I admit, looking at these awesome Cosplayers and Cosplay photographs makes me bite my tongue in envy and lowers my self-esteem. I’m also thankful and is full of admiration for these people for pushing the boundaries of Cosplay and showing other people, just how far Cosplay can go.

It’s not just about wearing a cheap halloween wig and calling it a day. It’s about the dedication to details and the perseverance to overcome all those costume obstacle! While it is very dreamy and Child-Like in it’s rawest form, I don’t see how being serious, determined and hardworking can be labelled “Immature”.

COSPLAY: The Series , Interview with Bonni Rambatan (Producer)

In line with TheCosplayChronicles’s collaboration with Cosplay:The Series, TCC will be bringing you a set of exclusive interviews with the cast and crew of CTS. This time, we’ll be focusing on the one man that made this web series work, Producer and Director Bonni Rambatan. Check out the other interviews here!

TCC: How did the idea start?

Oh, it was an accumulation of so many things, I suppose. First, I’ve always wanted to do a web series that allows me to do wild creative explorations, so there’s that. Then, I’ve always had this anger at how mainstream media always portrays cosplayers and con-goers as immature freaks, and “costuming” as a hobby one should be ashamed of and left to the losers. Fighting that is probably the ethical call on my part.

The final “I have to do this!” moment came when I got to know the cosplayers more personally through this social research I was helping a friend with. I found that cosplayers are the most dedicated, open, and accepting people there is, and it’s very ironic how they are so often ridiculed. It touched me.

Cosplay is not at all a hobby for rich people that buy really expensive costumes for childish reasons as one may have been too often led to believe: it’s a hobby for those willing to learn sewing, property making, make-up, photography, stage performance, sound mixing, the whole bunch, and be brave enough to withstand harsh words often from people that are otherwise close to them, such as parents or friends or the school. It takes certain kinds of people to do that.

So in my mind one day it all clicked. I wanted to make a web series about cosplay that is both critical and heartfelt, but also funny, ridiculous and anime-esque. COSPLAY: The Series was born.

TCC: How long did it take for you to finalize the storyline?

Several months, especially because during the entire time I have never met most of the cosplayers involved in the project! I live in a different town, so much of the coordination needed to be done online. I had the concept and the script, but 90% of the finalizations probably happened in some 10% of the final pre-production time.

An interesting thing about finalizing storylines for filmmakers with no budget is to start not with a detailed storyline but with what you got at hand currently. If there’s money, it’s easy: you write and you use the money to buy stuff and rent places and equipment you need to build what’s on the script. A lot of our work goes the other way: look at all the sets and costumes you can use and try your best to string together a coherent story that fits your concept using those things, so that you don’t spend money you don’t have. It’s very MacGyver-esque in a way: it requires you to improvise on the field, and fast.

TCC: What was your original concept and how different is it from the end result?

The original CTS had 22 episodes, and it was very much like Glee in ways that the group’s aim was to win in cosplay competitions at events and stuff. That’s why you see all those characters: in the original story, almost every character has a story. Annisa even develops an (unsuccessful) romance with a popular basketball star of the school, we show Ayu doing Korean dances on top of her cosplay activities, Arya gets busted by his girlfriends, etc. But of course resources weren’t enough, so we had to edit out a good portion of the story. You know, dream big, but keep your feet on the ground.

The story originally dealt with heavier issues and more critical, witty takes on culture, but everyone thought it made the series too serious so I decided to omit those. The main overarching plot about a country-specific-themed OC cosplay stays, but only because it paves the way for a Season 2 (“What happened to the project proposed to Mrs. Kartini?”), with most of the cultural identity weight pushed below surface. I think it’s better that way anyway, so more people will be able to enjoy it.

The concept of The Organization plot twist came later, because I thought the story became too realistic and common, not anime enough. People also commented that they wanted to see action and CGI in a film with such good costumes, so we killed two birds with one stone with the introduction of the Nina character and her relationship with Headmistress Kartini. We thought we could do a lot with it, something to explore in the next seasons. To be honest, the inspiration of this twist came when I was observing the set during pre-production and noticed it offers a wide variety of mysterious-looking places when shot at the right angle with the correct lighting!

The decision to keep most of the characters even though their story has been edited out was primarily because I really like them, and I still hope to tell their stories one day, maybe in sequels, specials, or adaptations. You never know!

TCC: Tell us a little about your professional background!

This is an interesting one, because I come from neither a film nor a cosplay background. I’m actually a critic – I hate to use that word, but yes, I publish papers and travel around the world to do public lectures on media and culture so that’s what people end up calling me. I’m also a freelance artist, but to my peers I’m less known for that.

To be fair, I have directed animation videos, made comics, and judged films before, and I also have several years of experience in the web content industry, so the web series was kind of a logical next step in artistic exploration for me. Still though, the series was the first thing I actually wrote, directed, and produced primarily by myself. I feel pretty good about it, and I feel very thankful to have such great cast and crewmembers who put so much trust in me.

TCC: Was getting the equipment for this series difficult? How did you managed?

What equipment? *laughs* You mentioned about the sheer lack of professional lighting and sound on our series on your first post about us, didn’t you? *laughs*

We had a Canon 550D, and that’s it, the only thing we started with. Of course we also needed lights badly so we hacked together nine common light bulbs and a dimmer in a couple of hours and used that. For outdoor night scenes, we rely on lights from motorbikes and cars. It’s that level of D.I.Y.

Our post-production studio AIU lent us this good microphone, but since our sound director Cahyo Baskoro couldn’t stay with us throughout production process we didn’t know how to use it properly, so we ended up with terrible audio that made Cahyo scream in horror when we showed him the results. Turns out it was the cable.

If we knew we were going to get this much love and attention from all our fans and viewers we would have put in more investment... Which we are doing on our second season, and we are looking very forward to it. And no, it’s still not that hard because we just buy and hack things instead of renting anything. When you work with cosplayers and hackers and D.I.Y. guys you get very good at being cheap. *laughs*

TCC: Introduce your filming equipment & Post processing equipment's with us!

Hmm, let’s see... Q-Cosushinkai Project is vast and diverse, so first of all there’s The Rozis Photography who invested the camera and all the lenses to be used, AIU Studio who invested music and sound engineering, and myself with the design and editing workstation. Here are some of the pictures.

We also have our own set at Cihanjuang, courtesy of associate producer Ausi Sekarismi (who also played Bando in the series). 90% of the filming was done here, and we had rooms for everyone to sleep in on the top floor, so it made work tons easier for us since we didn’t have to go to ten different places to finish the season.

TCC: I asked the actors and now I ask you. How far do you think Cosplay: The Series would go?

Honestly, I have no idea. Everyone is optimistic and I’m pretty sure a couple of people will want to kill me because I’m not screaming about how I think it will become the next greatest thing and all that. But hope is not a strategy.

What is a strategy is listening to our fans and what they want and keep doing our best to make better films. As long as we do that, I believe it can go pretty far. I do have plenty of plans and dreams for it in the future, that’s for sure.

TCC: Do you consider the series a success?

Oh, totally! We garnered thousands of fans and viewers in such a short time, and they bothered to actually interact with us and support us. I mean, of course it’s nothing compared to all the big viral stuff out there, but as much as I’d like to gain more numbers I also know it’s not just about numbers.

To this day I still have people telling me how much CTS has made them stronger, made them decide to keep cosplaying, or want to start cosplaying, and made my actors’ friends and families see their hobby in a more positive light, and so on. Being able to touch the hearts of people like that—that is true success for me. I hope to be able to keep doing that with my stories.

TCC: What are your future plans for the series?

I want to expand the franchise. CTS has always been about doing things differently, about creating unique dramas you are not likely to find in mainstream media and presenting them in a unique way. I want to add more to the story, give it more weight without losing its edge and humor.

In Season 2 you will find a lot more action, and a lot of CGI work, and the required plot twists to justify them. The series has been great so far, but unless you are an otaku you aren’t very likely to get the jokes or in fact the story. It’s a little too enclosed now. We want to change that.

I also want to explore more mediums, work together with more talents. Manga, anime, visual novel, iPhone application, you name it. This may come as a surprise to some people, but e-mailing us and saying “Hey, I can do (translations/reviews/artworks/music), can I use that talent to work with CTS?” usually works, and that’s how we’ve been growing. We have even found talents through our Facebook wall. As the number of fans grow we really want to hear more of that and open up doors to working anyone in the world. I should say if you’re reading this right now and want to give a shot at working with us in a way, don’t hesitate to leave something on our wall or inbox!

TCC: Any tips or advice for aspiring film makers?

Know what you want! That’s the most important thing. Most filmmakers (or artists, or writers, or anyone for that matter) just want to do stuff because it seems like a cool thing to do. It’s like writing a blog: you can either write about your boring daily activities and get two subscribers, or build a brand and get a thousand. Make an impact: give people a reason to watch your film, or better, look for it.

Also, make sure you know how to get there. It’s not enough to know what you want if what you want requires you to win the lottery to fund it. You’ll just never get it done. Try improvisation skills instead, whether strategically placing your scenes at a traffic jam at night to get free lighting or reacting to a good spot by improvising your script to incorporate it in place of that other impossible setting. You won’t produce a perfect film, but if you go indie it’s your best bet.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, be wildly creative, and always foster a can-do attitude in all your cast and crews. It’s a priceless atmosphere, the magic touch. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for all those laughter in the process!

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 18 review)

“Albeit critically, The Organization managed to thwart the looming evil and survive for another day. Internal conflicts abound in the shaken Organization, and Q-Cosushinkai kids decide they have had enough and finally return to their normal lives. Nobody is sure what to expect of their futures, but for now, peace is finally with them once again... ”

The concluding episode to 2 continuous season of story; episode 18 is an episode that starts off lukewarm, trails off with nostalgia and delivers a hook at the end.

The episode begins with Rain ( Mdm Kartini) and Cloud standing on what seemed like a balcony , against a beautifully manipulated skyline. The conversation between the duo gives the audience a quick recap and explanation of what transpired in the past 17 episode and why the characters did what they did.

The scene then cuts to Annisa and Ocha chilling on the open grass. Suddenly seeming so far away from the struggles of the previous episodes.

Again, I don't want to spoil your fun by writing out the script. But as it appears, the battle has not only saved the world temporarily. It has also matured the Q-Cosushinkai members who started off as innocent hobbyist and ended up as unwilling warriors. This segment of the story had me nodding my head in realistic agreement, that yes, nobody would believe their tale.

The conclusion to the battle between The Organisation and Alliance of Evil seemed a little slip shod to me and I would have loved for an extra episode or two to be used to wrap the battle up. But I guess, maybe this was a deliberate style of storytelling?

Overall, it is a nostalgic episode that closes the story by answering some questions while starting others. And while there are gaps in the delivery, it is in certain perspective, a reasonable and nice ending.

The BGM used in this episode supports the nostalgic mood very appropriately and to a certain extend, leaves the deepest impression on me. So kudos to the sound engineers for their effort!

How I made my Otome Yokai Zakuro Costume

Hi guys! Here to share with you how I made my Otome Yokai Zakuro costume! I hope you guys aren’t tired of these entries yet ^^;;. Now let’s hope this entry will help someone out there!

Kimono

When I first looked at the costume, I thought that it would be easier to wear the Kimono if it was a 2 piece instead of a the traditional one piece. Hence, against my better judgment, I made it into a top and bottom. I was of course, upset to find out that making them separately not only did NOT significantly ease the wearing, it also made the dressmaking process so much more tedious!

My advice? Just make a one piece Kimono!

Oh, second advice, please don’t use cheap fabric for Kimonos! Traditional Kimonos are made with superbly good fabric and while it’s kinda silly to spend a bomb on a hobby costume, it’s still no excuse for you to use overly cheap fabric either. The outcome/effect of using the right fabric is especially obvious in Kimono Costumes.

In case you’re interested to know, I used Polyester Cotton fabric for the Kimono. I love Polyester Cotton for their drape, solid colours and ease of handling. They don’t crease easily either!

Obi

The entire Obi is basically made of fabric and interfacing. The Interface allows for the Obi fabric to look stiff and authentic so don’t omit it!!! Even the bow has interfacing =) Because I didn’t have enough brocade fabric, the inner part of the Obi was done with a different fabric Little tips to help save a tiny bit of cost.

The red edge are ribbons glued on with my trusty fabric glue.

I knew I wouldn’t have the time and skill to tie my obi every time I wear the costume. So I made a fake bow and fixed it onto a long rectangle tube fabric. As you can see from the pictures, the rectangle fabric has velcros on it. I simply wrap the rectangle fabric around my waist and fix up the velcro when I wear it.

Because I was so anal about the structure of the bow, I even inserted wires into the tails of the bow so as to force it to stick out.

To secure the bow itself, I tied the centre portion together with a red ribbon. For added security, I also made sure I hand stitched it.

The bow before I stick it to the rest of the Obi.

I then wrapped another fabric around the bow and tails to finish up the entire bow.

The tails are detachable and the entire Obi can be wrapped up like this for easy storage.

Fox Ears

I first test and trial with papers before deciding on the final shape and size of the base that will make the fox ears. After that, I cut 2 piece of fur fabric in the shape below. Kind of like a crescent moon with a nose.

Folded them in half and hot glue the edges together. Remember to leave a gap for you to insert some cotton into it!

I don’t have any pictures of the subsequent steps. but basically you fill in the cotton and then seal up the gap with hot glue. After that, hot glue your preferred hair clip onto the ears

The hairclips I used hairclips were close to something like these.

Hair Scrunchie

Many cosplayers used 3 ribbons for her hair bows but for some reasons, it seemed more like some fluffy sort of scrunchie to me.

So I made a long rectangular fabric tube and sew an elastic band to the fabric tubes at the “ X ” points.

Remember not to sew the elastic band dead onto the fabric tube because that might cause your elastic band to become un-stretchable. Just sew some sort of belt loop for the elastic band to go through. Start by making a fabric tube, divide and get the right points to sew your loops, then sew the ends of the rectangle tube together.

It basically ends up looking like a flower of some sort, like the picture below. The Green “ X ” are the points to sew a ‘loop’ for the elastic to go through. The blue band is a representation of the elastic band.

Overall, I would say this is a relatively complicated costume. It looked simple on first sight but if you want to execute it properly, it will and has proven to be quite a task. No wonder traditional Kimono costs so much!

I had to do a lot of research about Kimono and specifically Furisode (young female’s kimono with very long sleeves). And I implore all Kimono costuming Cosplayers to do the same. The knowledge you get from the research really helps give your costume a touch of realism!

Again, I’d like to reiterate the importance of selecting the right fabric. Never EVER use cheap cotton for the Kimono unless it’s a Yukata which is worn in Summer. Traditional Kimono emphasises very much on the quality and drape of the fabric so there’s nothing worse than cotton Kimonos imho.

Here’s a picture of me laying the costume on the floor to gauge which red ribbon is more suitable as the trimming. Yes, I’m anal.

What’s worse, I do scary things like Photoshop-ing a rough sketch of the costume on me to see how I’d look with the full costume. It’s so anal I’m ashamed to share this //_\\. But I’d defend myself by saying this is a really effective way to ensure the final product compliments your body shape and height.

Of course, it’s not like photo shopping the picture will make the costume fit better. What it does is give you an idea of how to tweak the costume to fit your body shape/height better. For example, with Photoshop, I can gauge whether the fabric compliments each other. I can gauge if my Obi is too wide or too narrow for my height. I can gauge if my hair bows is too big or too small. I can gauge if my lace needed to be narrow or wide … and the list goes on!

I don’t know about you, but I HATE redoing costumes. I hate having to redo any parts more than once. So as much as I can, I aim to ace it on the first try (it doesn’t work often though T_T). Nothing worse than finishing the costume only to find out your costume is too long/short/tight/high/makesyoulookfat/un-proportionate right?

Some people might argue that tweaking the costume will make it less accurate, which I must say, isn’t incorrect. But let’s just say I prefer to look presentable than end up looking awkward because I insist on dead accuracy. Anyway, those people who criticise won’t be there to praise your Costume accuracy if you end up looking fat, stubby and ugly in your costume =x

There’s a lot more minute details and efforts spent on getting this costume to where it is now but I shall not bore you guys with my anal talks. I mean, talks about how anal I am. Not that specific body area *cough*.

Otome Yokai Zakuro (Photoshoot)

Hi guys, I’m here to share with you guys some of my Otome Yokai Zakuro photo shoot pictures. I had a mini photoshoot session with Sour_Cheese nearly 6 months ago and goodness knows what took me so long to come up with this entry @_@;

It was a hot afternoon as per Singapore climate. Much thanks again to the very wonderful Sour_Cheese for her photography and patience >w< Because I didn’t have any helper for the shoot, I don't have any Behind-the-scene photos to share ^^;

I love how Sour_Cheese captured the sun rays here! It so adds to the lazy afternoon mood

Otome Yokai Zakuro’s all about the Sakuras. So I lugged a bunch of plastic Peach Blossoms to the shoot. Was glad we managed to use it

Can anyone spot the little bird xD?

Finally an action shot! Being a half Fox Spirit, Zakuro’s a very powerful and agile fighter. Sadly, the costume inhibits drastic actions and this was the best I could do >.< Maybe in the future, I can do something better! I look so manly yeah ?

We tried to do some act-doe shot with the bamboos but the bamboos were sinister!

They prick! See the little hooks on my fingers? Erm, ignore the retarded looking face behind =_=.

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 17 review)

However, they may very well be underestimating their enemy, as the time-manipulating cyborg easily defeats them with moves The Syndicate is very familiar with...

My first impression? I love the dynamic camera angles employed in this episode! Not only do they bring a touch of design to the cinematography, they also helped emphasised the actions.

Speaking of actions, I'm sure everyone would agree with me that the lovable N.E.W.S (lol. Pun intended) has some very slick parkour moves! Even though the prelude with the N.E.W.S team jumping around was too long and doesn't contribute to the story, it was at least, a very enjoyable 2 minutes. The slow-mo shot at the beginning was also very memorable.

But the battle with The Prototype (Bonni alert?!) had me craving for more and feeling somewhat disappointed that the fight was so hastily presented. I'm also sorry to say that the voice-over in this episode had my eyebrows twitching uncontrollably. Yes, I blame the Japanese seiyuus for spoiling me with their delicious voice but I would love for more emotions and urgency to be displayed by the N.E.W.S.

Post production and special effects were as usual, seamless. And the final plus point, Vincent looked really convincing and good in the final scene. Cheers for eye candy!

Guess what? Ouran Host CLub will be having their Live Action Drama extended into a Movie! According to Maria, the title will hit the big screen in 17th March 2012 !

With big names like Rurouni Kenshin and Ranma1/2 coming back with Live Action Movies. It seems like an awesome year for Otakus like us to celebrate the slow infiltration of our fandom into the Mainstream >D!

Interview with Hitomi @ EOY

I had the good chance to be one of the media representative at EOY a couple weeks back. Here is the interview segment we had with Hitomi.

Q: What inspired her to be a Maid?

She has a younger brother at home and so she takes care of her brother. She likes to do more for other people.

Q: What about all the singing and dancing?

As a maid, she thinks she cannot get through to the customer. That’s why she wants to get through to them by singing and dancing. Through the song, people will feel happier.

Q: So people say being a celebrity maid is like a celebrity cosplayer?

I’m actually only a Maid Idol

Q: What does she think about being a Maid idol then?

It make people more happy. That’s why she thinks its a very touching job (?)

Q: Will she ever be going into cosplay?

She has done a few but she definitely wants to do more of it.

Q: Any characters that she likes very much?

She likes Hatsune Miku

Q: You’ve played “Pimp Butler” the card game. how do you feel about it?

Oh yes, it’s very fun. She’s very sad she lost and wants to play again.

Q: Since you will be going back to Japan, did they give you a pack to play?

Yes they have!

Q: Will you be playing it in Japan?

Yes definitely, she will be playing at home.

Q: Does she have any tips on how she maintains her stamina when she sings and dance? How does she train herself?

She does dance lessons and she’s part of this Team Junjou duo.

Q: How does she train her stamina?

Oh, keep on practising haha

Q: Does she have any tips or tricks for aspiring Maids?

Her tip is, to feel as a maid you should aspire to make other people happy.

Q: Does she have Maid Idol?

No..

Q: How does she feel, to be invited as a guest of honour to a Cosplay Event, as a maid?

This invitation was actually extended from 6 months back and she’s very excited about it.

She’s very happy and excited to be invited

Q: So does she feel it’s weird for a Cosplay Event t be inviting her?

According to her, besides Singapore, she has also been invited to a multitudes of event abroad.

COSPLAY: The Series , Interview with Ayu & Bando

TCC: How did you get the role and what was your first reaction/thought?

AI: I got offered to play this role by Kazu, and she told me the part I had to play was just like me! So my first reaction was, “Wait, am I really like that?” *laughs*

AS: I joined casting, and it so happens that the role I had to play sort of fits me, only in a much more hyperbolic way! I still like jumping around and laugh a lot, so the challenge was to tune those down and get into a very gloomy character.

TCC: Did you have to sacrifice anything (school, homework, club activities, work, partners, family, etc) to take part in this series?

AI: Not really! Just some simple schedule rearrangements was necessary, but that was it.

AS: Yup! First, obviously I don’t get to go out much, because the series was pretty much shot at my places. Regarding assignments from my studying, it definitely needs a lot of time management but it had to be done!

TCC: How was the whole filming process like? Describe with details :D!

AI: I didn’t really understand what was going on! It was just so full of meticulous details and considerations about angles and sounds and everything!

BR: *laughs* Especially because we were working with no equipment whatsoever!

AS: I’d never actually met the director or any of the crews when we started, we just talked online. I was even still not familiar with some of the cosplayers in the project! But we got closer as we progress. As Associate Producer and the person responsible for the set, it was also my job to make sure everyone gets fed!

The process was interesting because we simply make use of whatever was available. It was tiring because we had to run all over the place to rearrange all the properties so that things make sense, but all of that was worth it seeing the end results and knowledge we all gained.

TCC: Have you ever acted before? How was it like to be an actor/actress?

AI: Only in cabarets, does that count? *laughs* It’s not easy of course, and sometimes it’s especially hard in front of the camera!

AS: Yes, at my school’s theater club. I always performed in every school event. But my role is usually that of either the loud narcissistic female or the one who gets bullied all the time, so this one was very different.

Acting in front of the camera is also very different than on stage. Theater performances usually require hours of intense training, while in our process it was on set improvisation that mattered, how you acted right then and there, and you just repeat the scene until you get it right. It was hard! *laughs* It’s a good thing I can memorize the script!

TCC: How was it like working with Bonni Rambatan/ Producer and the entire crew?

AI: It was fun!!! I was really excited about it, because Bonni had a great story!! I also love the fact that he used my songs as a couple of the soundtracks! *laughs* I loved the entire crew, too, they were very helpful!

BR: Ayu here is the lead singer of Celestial Dreams Project and a couple of other popular bands in Bandung. We’re all thrilled to have her songs in the series!

AS: It was exciting!! Each and everyone jokes around all the time, but when we start working, they got all serious and professional. They were also very patient to get the perfect shot, even if we had to do the scene over and over again! We’re not professional actors, so I guess that is bound to happen.

TCC: Okay, something totally different. What’s your favourite Ice cream and why?

AI: Chocolate! I love chocolate, it’s a part of my life... *laughs*

AS: I like chocolate, but on a hot day I prefer those fresh, acid-y ones, ones with bright colours, simply because they’re more mouth watering!

TCC: Which Anime/Manga/Game character would you date and why?

AI: I’ve never really thought about it... But I do love Inuyasha.

AS: Hmm... I’m not sure... I think I was once in a very big crush with Inuyasha, because he’s cute, handsome, strong, childish, and a shundere! *laughs*

TCC: How do you feel about girls like Ayu in Real Life? Ayu didn’t have much scenes in Season 1, would she be making more appearances in Season 2?

AI: I think she’s amazing because she isn’t shy about using her assets to help her friends! *laughs* I don’t want to judge her flirtatious side, but I do find the character interesting. I do hope to get more appearances in Season 2! *laughs*

TCC: She seems quite the shady character doesn’t she? Do you think you would be able to befriend someone like her in real life? I mean, getting connected with her frequency is difficulty by itself.

AS: Yeah... I can’t really tell since I’ve never met anyone quite like her in real life. But I think I’ll be cool with her, because I’m not picky when it comes to friends, as long as they don’t bother me. Also, we both like psycho stuff anyway, like playing around with paper cutters! Maybe we can go out to see psycho movies together! *laughs*

BR: Fadli and I never stop smiling at how extremely well (and scary) Chizu imitates Bando! *laughs* I’m not sure what I was going to get when I opened casting for the “guro girl,” but then I saw Chizu, and she was perfect! I think naturally Chizu is already connected with Bando’s frequency! *laughs*

TCC: Tell us something about yourself that is totally different from your character!

AI: I don’t like to flirt with old men!! *laughs*

AS: I like bright colours, although I also like black. Sometimes I really like to be feminine, with a dress, high heels and makeup. I like joking and simply being noisy with friends, and I’m actually pretty scared of ghosts and zombies!

TCC: How far do you think Cosplay: The Series would go?

AI: I think it’s already gone pretty far, so I can only hope the best for the series... It’s really great.

AS: We will keep going far and hopefully even get adapted into larger projects in the industry!

TCC: Does the series have any affect on your life?

AI: No, I try to keep my personal life separate.

AS: Well, I get more busy and I gained a lot of new friends! *laughs*

TCC: What kind of future do you foresee for the hobby ‘Cosplay’?

AI: Hmm, I think almost every country now has a cosplay community, right? I think people are getting more and more creative, and I love seeing them and seeing the growth and development.

AS: Cosplay will be one of the most desired hobbies because it can really push your creativity forward, and also because it can bring us closer to those with a similar passion, wherever they may be in the world. People will also understand more about cosplay, and the reason we do it.

Shakugan No Shana Christmas Outfit (Photo shoot)

I can hardly believe a year has gone by that fast! Before I knew it, Christmas is just a few days away! I still have a truckload of stuffs to do which I’m falling desperately behind.

Anyway, before I miss the season again, I just want to share some of my recent photoshoot photos with you guys. Let’s hope no puke was induced with my act-cuteness ;D

So last weekend, my super awesome photographers and I brave the enthusiastic crowd and rain to shoot this set of pictures in Orchard Road itself! Presenting Shana from Shakugan no Shana, Season 2’s final episode outfit! Yes, the outfit she wore to confess to Yuuji and to fight the final boss And yes, I’m that much of a Shana fangirl!

Sour Cheese Geno

It was a mad mad rush getting the costume together and it has got to be one of my ghetto-est costume ever! The photoshoot was arranged in around 1 week + and I only decided on which costume to wear like, 5 days before it!

Finding the right fabric at the right price was what took up most of my time! I went to Chinatown and Toa Payoh but couldn’t find anything suitable. In the end, in view of the nearing deadline, I bit my lips and bought expensive Poplin (pretty much like Cotton) from Spotlight instead.

I hope you find the use of poplin unnoticeable in the pictures because I deliberately took the trouble of making a felt lining inside to give the coat stiffness and volume befitting of a winter coat xD

Pretending to be cold in a tropical country is hilariously lame. But ah well, you guys know me … XD

Waiting for Yuuji to choose her…

I also didn’t have enough fur so I had to go out and buy extra fur just before the photoshoot. So yes, as you would have guessed, that part of the fur was safety pinned and double sided taped on. So ghetto *hides*.

The weather was so unpredictable that day. It would be clear for a while and then pour so heavily the next moment. Like what Sour-cheese said, it’s almost as if Mother Nature was having urine incontinence xD Also as an added misfortune, my boots decided to give way before the shoot start so I had to secure it with guess what? Scotch tape. I am so awesome LOL! *gets bashed*

Sorry for the lack of text in this entry. I honestly don’t know what to say and I’m really sleepy now so please pardon me.

You’d notice an incredible amount of photos compared to my other photoshoot entries, that’s because of the awesome photographers that made it possible. Good photo won’t need no photoshop right ? And ironically, the breaking down of my PC that has forced me to not have any means to photoshop the pictures hahah. So yes, none of the photos here have been photoshopped by yours truly.

I’m not exactly good at doing MOE but nevertheless, I hope you guys enjoyed the photos and remember to leave me a comment!

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 16 review)

With the power of the Legendary Treasure at their disposal, our heroes have little trouble defeating the numerous demon armies sent by The Alliance of Evil. But the Alliance have made a backup plan, and unleashes their secret weapon just as the group is already at their weakest...

This has got to be the cutest episode by far. Not only have the production team managed to come up with something that fits the Cosplay theme, it has also managed to incorporate light hearted humour into an otherwise stern context. The abundant reference to Geek/Otaku culture also brings a smile on fellow Otakus (*coughmecough*) .

As always, the graphics and post production displays a high standard of quality deliverance. I especially love the camera angles employed in this episode as it brings the viewers right into the scene.

I’d have to admit the death scene took me back by surprise . I wasn’t quite expecting life and death issue to pop up when one talks about a teeny hobby such as ‘Cosplay’. The idea of anyone losing themselves in pursue of another identity (Cosplay) sends a shiver down my spine. Good kids out there, remember this is just a show! We don’t kill people when we cosplay hokays >D?

Ranma 1/2 Live Action Movie

Good Smile Cafe (Madoka Puella Magica)

It was my main agenda to make my Animax Musix trip to Japan an Otaku adventure. The plan was to visit as much themed cafes and Otaku hideout as we could. But truth be told, I didn't know there was a Madoka Cafe until the night before, a Japanese fellow Otaku whom we met through mutual friends enlightened me xD

According to him, that place is always flooded. So I guess we were lucky to enter at a really empty slot and didn't need any queuing xD

The Madoka Cafe was actually the Good Smile Cafe but dressed up to the Maho Shoujo theme. At the moment, it is also sharing a menu with Type-Moon.

The Good Smile / Madoka cafe is located at the AKIBA Culture Zone building. It took us so much trouble to find it because the map we got from said Japanese friend ( Thanks Masa!) was too brief! And to make matters worse, we mistook the JR station for our Tokyo Subway Station LOL. Apparently, AKIBA Culture Zone is like the newest landmark but hell would some aliens ( Foreigners) know that =_= ;;

The nearest JR station is Akihabara. Further down, there is also the Tokyo Subway, Hibiya Line (akihabara). Other than the cafe, other levels of the AKIBA Culture Zone building also caters to Otakus by supplying a wide array of merchandises. According to Kotaku.com, the building itself is a one stop shopping paradise for Otakus. Carrying products ranging from Figurines, books, T-shirts to even clothes for fashionable Otakus.

I said ‘according’ because yours truly barely had time to shop around the building. But from the little I see, I can tell Kotaku.com was not lying ( XD)

The Goodsmile cafe is on the 5th floor.

The menu features a fair amount of variety. Ranging from full meals to desserts and cocktail. Surprisingly, no cover charge is applied!!!!!!!!!!!

And of course, the food is dressed to theme xD check out the Kyubi curry rice xD

We didn't feel hungry and certainly didn't have the time to linger so we only ordered drinks.

I ordered the Sayaka drink while Zephyus ordered the Blue Jelly. Complimentary with each order, is a Madoka paper coaster which the waitress very sensibly, hands you instead of putting under your drink xD

We also observed them giving full meal ordering customers, Kyubeh paper mat xD Such a nice touch eh?

The entire cafe is filled with Good Smile nendroids and figmas. There is also related Madoka merchandise, sketches and wall decorations. Photo flood!

All in all, this is definitely a comfortable Otaku chilling place that not only allows photography but is affordable too! And of course, it is a must go to place for any Madoka Fans at Akihabara.

P/s: Yes, it was very embarrassing to snap so many photographs there even thought Photography is allowed T_T

The effects of different Fake Lashes

To me, Fake lashes is one of the most important accessories for cosplays. The instantly dramatic effect it gives is God sent for people with small eyes like me.

Fake lashes appear similar but is are not quite so. When different lashes are used differently, it can create a very different effect. The use of different lashes can either make your eyes look round and innocent or long and seductive. Kind of like the final touch to your cosplays.

When I bought D.U:P lashes from Japan, they gave me a booklet with pictures of their lashes and the effect it produces.

I thought it was a cool way to see the difference different lashes produce so I took some pictures of them to share. And no, I don’t think it’s necessary for you to get the same brand of lashes just use the catalogue as a reference to the effect different type of lashes can create.

Personally I’ve always preferred the ‘Rich’ and ‘Cross’ type of lashes. But the ‘Furry’ type looks really interesting too, I wonder if anyone knows where I can get them cheap

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 15 review)

Episode 15 begins with a solo scene of Darth Snotius and the new Headmaster. The 2 of them, along with various cosplayers form The Alliance of Evil.

The character known as Darth Snotius is a man suffering from radioactive genetic mutation. And the effects of his mutation causes his snot to, guess it, glow. He is a man so hurt and cursed by the mainstream society he grew into a revenge monster. A twisted monster out to curse the normal and to build a world where the freaks will rule. And their first step? Invade the organisation!

The Q-Cosushinkai club members joins the organisation and receives intensive training to prepare themselves for the fight to save their loved ones. What will happen when The Alliance of Evil and their operatives attack The Organisation? Await the big battle next episode!

I'd say this is the most confusing and queer episode for me and I'm not even talking about glowing snots xD! Though I commend the team for thinking out of the box and giving the characters some Unique Selling Point, I doubt the scientific possibility of glowing snots xD

I can't say the current development is what I wished for but I'm holding back my opinions and waiting for the climax to unveil itself.

AFA Regional Cosplay Competition 2011 (Results) + National Pride?

Near a month too late but here is some footage from the AFA Regional Cosplay Competition’s Result announcement! The pure emotion showed on all the faces of the participants and the crowd was something I decided not to edit away ^^;

And apologies much for the immerse amount of shaking and jerking when I was screaming for my Home Team participants xD

Speaking of the Home team, am I the only one who feel upset with fellow Singaporeans for their lack of support for their representing country women ?!

If it was any other country, I’d understand the lack of cheers was due to geographic difference. But in an event that at least 50% (and that’s a conservative estimation) of the participant is from the same country, I was expecting a MUCH warmer support!

Tell me I’m cynical but I can’t help thinking it is all rooted back to many Singaporean’s innate tendency to support something foreign or be the first to put down their local products (general term).

Yes, I’m ranting and complaining here. But frankly, I feel that this whole “Singaporean are not good enough for Singaporeans” notion has to stop. Not only does that mentality demoralises the person (I’m talking about Singaporeans in this case) with the belief, it also spreads to people around him/her. It’s like a vicious cycle of discouragement and giving up.

Makes me wonder is my own country the only one with this issue?

Does this happen in any of your country? Probably not in the same context of a Regional Cosplay Competition but maybe more on pride in the local production or talents?

And guess what? I was given the great privilege to be there! All thanks to Animax and Last Exile: Fam, the silver wing!

We were put up at the Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel which is a 4 star hotel just a stone's throw away from the arena.

This is the view from our hotel room. Yes, we were that close haha. It was only 11:20 am but there were already a lot of concert attendees waiting to go in!

I'm not much of a concert person so my opinions might not be the most comprehensive. But the whole concert attending ettiquette and culture in Japan is so different from Singapore! Firstly, they come wayyyy early and they buy all the merchandise they can, regardless of the price! And we're talking about a face towel going for like 2500yen!

I guess because Japan is a relatively big country, going from one state to another is a time & money consuming activity. Thus making the whole experience more treasure worthy and worthy of spending to have a memory of it.

Speaking of mementos, check out the awesome photo book Animax gave us :D!

Here's a picture of my Animax Musix loot. Sadly, because we were such concert noobs and didn't understand much Japanese, we missed the chance to buy any merchandise =\ By the time we went out after the end of the concert, everything was already gone!

The plastic fan was a freebie while the 4 metallic ring thingy at the top were confetti that were blown down at the final stage. The thousands of metallic paper rings that glided down slowly was such a grand sight!

The vibe and excitement of the attendee was evident and contagious even at 11am. It was like a tiny matsuri with people queuing for merchandise and food xD

Lucky for us, we were allowed to skip the queue and went in straight with our Guest Pass. Then we did a short interview with Animax Japan. Hope I didn't say anything too stupid >o<

Sadly, as with all Japanese Concert etiquette, no photography was allowed so you guys will have to read words. The hall itself was huge and according to this page, there was 12,000 fans there that day! THE PASSION!!

Shokotan kick-started the concert with 3 solo songs and a lot of crowd interaction. I admit, I was never a fan. But after this experience, I concurred that this girl really has the voice and deserves her place. Not to mention she is super cute too >.<!

Because I have a goldfish memory and the lack of photography really takes the beef away so I'm going to jump to parts of the concert that left a deeper impression on me.

Angela were so cool! Zeph was especially excited to see Katsu san and loved his white costume to bits. Angela performed 2 solo songs with "Shangri-La" as the first. For the last song, they made all the fans dance with their towel and of course, everyone with a towel did. Then they announced that this was their last song which got whining replies from the crowd. But as it turns out, they trolled us! It was a 6 hour concert (OMG) and they came back on stage again! Collaborating with Minori Chihara and doing orchestra versions of their song.

Katsu-san was hilarious too! At the end of the concert, when everyone came on stage for the final thank you and photo taking. Atsuko somehow coerced him into doing something weird. Then he got pushed to the front most part of the stage alone and started getting the audience to do some sort of saluting hand action/signal plus cheering thing xD And of course, the whole Arena did it. Wish I knew what he was saying T_T

When it ended, he frantically ran back to where Atsuko (Along with the other stars) were standing. But not before he went down on his knees and stuck his face to the floor in front of them xD Apologetic much XD?

We were seated at the first row of B1 and it was a really good spot because many of singers would come out from the left and walk directly IN FRONT of us to get to the stage! Angela, May’n, Minoru Chihara and Marina Kawano all walked this path

I wished I knew more anime songs though, many of the awesome anime song didn't register in my brain so i felt a little bored when songs I didn't know were sang.

A very interesting segment of the concert was the “Fans selection” where they got fans to submit request for songs and artiste they want to see perform. Some of the fans selection song includes 'Joint' from Shakugan no Shana, 'Butterfly' from Digimon, ‘Anata Dake Mitsumete’ru’ from Slam Dunk, 'Sobakasu' from Rurouni Kenshin, 'Purachina' from Cardcaptor Sakura and "Nowhere" from MADLAX . Mannny more were sung but I can't remember ToT

In all honesty, we were so blown away by all the artist! Hearing them live was so different OoO! I've always thought they sounded great on cds but hearing it life.. was so powerful! Everyone's voices came across so strongly (with the exception for ayami =x) and effortlessly.

We were so excited to see KOTOKO and Angela on the list. And when interviewed by Animax Japan, we individually mentioned that we want to hear Angela sing 'Shangri-La' and KOTOKO sing ' Light my Fire'.

I was really psyched up about hearing KOTOKO. I've always liked her songs but her recent work for Shana Final's Op song made her my top artiste among the bunch. I was so afraid the song wasn't included but turns out, it was her final song and I can see why. The stage effect for this song was SO AWESOME!!!!! They created matching background screen animation and lightings and made the stage spit out FLAMES!!

Like. REAL. FIREEEEEE!!!!!!

OH MY GAWDDDDDD!!!! How cool is that?!!!! And I got another shot of orgasm when they played the Anime opening animation in the middle of the song. It was so cool T___T

I jumped like nobody’s business along with the entire arena (everyone's so high!) and waved my pathetically dying light stick frantically.

May'n being the main star came out for a single song somewhere in the middle and then came out again as the final singer,doing a medley of songs. Surprisingly, the only Macross Frontier song she sang was 'Universal Bunny'.

All in all, it was a wonderful 6 hours. (Yes, 6 hours O_O) We had thought it would be a crappy make shift concert but it surpassed our expectation and left us, along with the entire arena, feeling extremely excited. After the concert ended, many fans including ourselves, lingered around the entrance for merchandise (they disappeared almost immediately) and took pictures of the auction items the artistes donated for the Tohoku Pacific Quake victims.

Animax has definitely organised an overwhelmingly successful music event exclusively for Anime fans. At the price of 8500 yen, the concert is a steal for so many artistes and full 6 hours of entertainment! Any Anime fans going to Japan next year, remember to keep a look out for Animax Musix !

And don’t feel left out (even though you really should =x) for missing this. Because Animax will be screening this concert in 3 parts coming next february on236 Ch! Hey, maybe you guys will spot me and my light stick xD !

I had so much fun that day and it’s all thanks to the awesome Animax for giving me the chance to be there!

“Geekology 101”, a 1-man photographic showcase by internationally
acclaimed, Philippines-based cosplay photographer Jay Tablante opened today.

Incorporating more than a dozen works featuring global cosplay celebrities Alodia & Ashley
Gosiengfiao, Jinri Park and Yayahan dressed as characters from Marvel and Japanese animanga
and pop culture.

The showcase also included a workshop and shooting seminar by Mr. Tablante, targeted at
cosplayers, cosplay enthusiasts and photographers.

In the two two-hour long sessions, he demonstrated studio photography techniques, styling tips,
and methods to infuse life and realism into cosplay characters.

Ms. Alodia Gosiengfiao also graced the event as a guest-of-honor and she was joined by
numerous cosplayers from the local scene who were present at the event.

Jointly organized by EightBit Media & pop culture blog The Neo Tokyo Project, and sponsored by
Canon, Grid MMS and Camwerkz, Geekology 101 is held at Grid MMS at *SCAPE (2 Orchard

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 14 review)

Episode 14 reveals the motive of the secret organisation and brings the Q-Cosushinkai club into a bigger trouble.

After disappearing for a long time, Vincent returns to the club heavily injured. Sukma and the new sexy school nurse enters the clubroom and breaks the truth, the club is in big trouble.

The new sexy school nurse Rahayu, introduces herself as Cloud and sister of ex Headmaster Kartini. Explaining why the secret organisation is after them and why Ex Headmaster Kartini tried to disband the club to save them.

Science fiction and supernatural abilities makes they way into the plot this time and blows the entire series into a totally different genre. I won't spoil so watch and find out about the ultimate secret yourself!

The final scene features Cloud with a secret organisation member wearing elaborate costumes that seems to pay reference to Lineage. Anyone has any idea where the costumes are from?

The final scene makes you skip a heartbeat as the role of a supposed 'friendly Ally ' becomes questionable and pave way for more twists in the future.

The CGI effect of this episode is cool as usual though I personally find the clubroom scene somewhat deadpan even though the acting were commendable. I suspect it has something to do with the light and colour coordination. Maybe season 3 can feature more colourful uniform and locations =x?

I also can't say I love the 'zoomed in' effect in the clubroom. It made for rather blurry video. Would much preferred it if it had been a closeup of the faces instead.

All in all, episode 14 is an interesting episode that pushes the series to into a darker and more exciting conspiracy. What's next, is to see if this new crux makes or breaks the story. What do you think?

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 13 review)

Sorry for the late review, been just so busy!

In Episode 13, the plot finally begun to inch towards climax and the secret organisation slowly starts to have faces to them.

The episode begin with Sukma telling the Missing-In-Action Vincent not to go off disappearing himself even though Nina has disappeared and also updating him about the happenings in school. Apparently, Vincent and Sukma both knows the Zombie manifestation well though sadly, it was not explicitly explained. Sukma ends the conversation by warning Vincent that after the mysterious disappearance of Nina, another new girl, which we all presume is Panda, has gone missing too after protesting against the orders of the new Head Master. Apparently, our favourite lolita Agnesya is up next.

And sure enough, the scene cuts to the cute Agnesya taking a cake out of the fridge and bringing it to her mother. Who turns around only to transform into, Grell.

What ensued next is a battle scene for the Kuroshitsuji fans to fan girl/boy about. Shall not spoil them for you so go watch it yourself!

With Nina, Panda and Agnesya kidnapped, what would happen to Q-Cosushinkai Cosplay Club and it’s members? What would the new Head Master do to the school? Let’s await more answers in episode 14!
